The Glorious 25th of May
The Glorious 25th of May is the day commemorated in Ankh-Morpork by survivors of the People's Revolution of the Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May, as depicted in Night Watch. Rob Wilkins revealed via Twitter that he chose the date when Terry asked him to find something that wouldn’t offend anyone, and he chose Paul Weller’s birthday.[1]
On Roundworld, the 25th of May has become a day of celebration of Terry Pratchett and of supporting Alzheimer's research, marked by wearing lilac, as the characters in the book do. As a result many Discworld podcasts have produced special episodes on May 25th, which are listed here.
The date is coincidentally shared with Towel Day, which celebrates Douglas Adams (it’s two weeks after his death, which seems appropriate since Adams famously hated and missed deadlines), and celebrating both is not uncommon. The first Towel Day was in 2001, a year before the publication of Night Watch. (It’s also “Geek Pride Day”, which started in Spain in 2006, but that’s less commonly celebrated by Pratchett fans.)
